Hi Cindy,
I am glad to see you here. Your recording is lovely. I hope to hear many more recordings from you.

Welcome back Ruth,
Here's another for you & Stav. Sorry for the lateness of my entry this week, I'm having some
technical issues with my mic, probably due to me keep moving the poor thing around the room.
I do hope it PL's ok.

Hi raven,
I always enjoy listening to your lovely voice. I hear a constant backround hissssss which is a little distracting. And the silence in the end is much to long. But other than that, the reading is great.

Hi DreamingDoll,
I never reject other people's recordings. I have never recorded, so I admire those who do this. Your recording may be a little too quiet, but other wise it's great. And I need to know it's duration...

Morning,
Thanks Ruth for tweaking my recording. If it's okay with both you & Stav, please use the "parting_bronte_rn_nolev.mp3" file tweaked by Ruth.
I can only apologise for the mess I've made this time, it's been a rough week but I'm having serious mic issues.
Just between us, I think it doesn't love me at the moment, as I keep telling it I'll use it more & then not having the time. Moving it around the room all the time isn't helping as I don't have a permanent setup.
I'm also a well known procrastinator with my head in the clouds.

You're sure you have the right person Stav? I've always considered my voice a little bassy, which is why noise-cleaning is always a fun event.

Welcome back, Morgan
We only ask for re-records if a section is not understandable - generally owing to problems with recording equipment. We reject recordings only with extreme reluctance, as we welcome all readers. In your case, if I remember correctly, we just couldn't get rid of some particularly difficult background noise that was making your voice very difficult to hear.
I think you are probably using an inbuilt computer mic? It is a very tricky noise - noise-cleaning has absolutely no effect on it! Nearly all of the problems would be solved with a separate USB mic. (What's Santa bringing this Christmas? )
I have done quite a bit of playing around with this file, and found a notch filter for Audacity which took out the odd hum at around 90 Hz. I then did a High Pass Filter to make your voice less muffled, amplified and noise-cleaned. Then I passed it through the Levelator to even up the volume - your voice tends to drop away at the end of phrases.
I would like you to concentrate hard on keeping up the volume of your voice throughout the phrases, and speaking a little more slowly. If you listen to the lines "In the evening, when we're sitting By the fire, perchance alone," you will hear how lovely and clear your speech is when you slow down a little. I look forward to hearing you in future weekly poetry projects.
Anyway, take a listen to the results of my playing about:

It was worth it, I think, to get this result. Doesn't it sound good?

2. I didn't use noise cleaning and I really don't know why:? |
1. I have added your name to your catalogue page.
2. I think I see where Stav is coming from. Your input volume was too high, and your voice has been "clipped" all through the recording where it hit the top and bottom of the recording window, thus causing distortion of your voice. Although the volume has subsequently been reduced, you can see in the wave form the flat bits where your voice has been cut off.
I would highly recommend reducing your input volume, either in the recording software or in your computer's control panel, so that your wave form never touches the top or bottom of the window.
It still sounded rather loud, so I have de-amplified it a little, and added a few seconds of silence at the end. I have also added the ID tags, which were missing. The required details are always in the top post of each project. I have re-uploaded the amended file, so there is no need for you to do anything more with it.
Good luck with future recordings.

Thank you sooooo much for your recommendations I'll reduce the imput volume next time |

Ruth, thanks so much for the suggestions. As you guessed I am using a built in microphone.
Did you do all that with the regular audacity program or are there extension that need to be added?

Gah! I remember writing a reply to this, but then we had a power cut.
Most of it was regular Audacity 1.3.
The notch filter is an Audacity plug-in that you get here. About three-quarters down the page. Instructions for use are in the readme.txt file included in the zip.
The Levelator is a free program available from http://www.conversationsnetwork.org/levelator/
I think I did some noise-cleaning in the free basic version of Wavepad. I sometimes get better results with that than with Audacity noise-cleaning. I have ver. 3.10 that doesn't keep asking me to buy the Master's Edition, but I think you can still download a version that gives you the basic functions free from here.
