This book is now complete and is available from the LibriVox catalogue: http://librivox.org/scaramouche-by-rafael-sabatini/

"Scaramouche"!

Quote:
[Scaramouche] is a romantic adventure and tells the story of a young aristocrat during the French Revolution. His successive endeavors as a lawyer, politician, actor, lover, and buffoon lead his enemies to call him "Scaramouche" (also called Scaramuccia, a roguish character in the commedia dell'arte), but he impresses many with his elegant orations and precision swordsmanship. The later film version includes one of the longest, and many believe, best swashbuckling sword-fighting scenes ever filmed.

The novel has a memorable start: (BOOK I: THE ROBE, CHAPTER I, 'THE REPUBLICAN') "He was born with the gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad. And that was all his patrimony. His very paternity was obscure, although the village of Gavrillacs had long since dispelled the cloud of mystery that hung about it."

This is the second of two solo projects that I'll be working on over the next few months (the other is Thoreau's Walden). This is the "fun" book, while Walden is the more serious.

I'll be alternating between the two, and continuing to contribute to group projects, so progress will be slow. I hope to have both books finished by the middle of March 2007.

Hi.

I just heard about this project via Mur Lafferty's Geek Fu Action Grip, and wanted to say that I'm actually in the middle of podcasting Captain Blood (and A Princess of Mars) right now over at Lights Out Radio, http://madpoet.typepad.com/lor I'm up to chapter ten of Captain Blood, and will be putting up chapter eleven this week.

I haven't had a chance to listen to any of your completed projects, and I'm not certain that mine will be up to the quality of work that you're doing, but I thought I would let you know that I'm out here.

Smile

Zach Ricks, aka Mad Poet.

Zach's podcast of "Captain Blood" is well worth the listen! I highly recommend it.

Since he's doing such a great job, with Dr. Blood, I've changed my reading to "Scaramouche"!

(BTW, he's also reading Burrough's "A Princess of Mars" ... cool!) 8)

I'm going to post links to each of the chapters as I get them complete.

Here's a synopsis of the first chapter:

Scaramouche - A Romance of the French Revolution

Book 1 - Chapter 1
============

The action begins in the small French village of Gavrillac during the turbulent period leading up to the French Revolution.

In this chapter we are introduced to our young hero, Andre Louis Moreau. Andre is French, a lawyer and a bastard... hmm...

...After a quick introduction, our hero dashes headlong into... a lengthy political and philosophical debate with his good friend Phillippe... um...

... ok, ok, so maybe I'm not very good at doing summaries... but trust me, it's better than I make it sound!!

Our quick-witted fiscal intendent will soon be swept up by villainy and revolution, and it will not be long before swords are flashing and swashs are buckled.

Without further ado... here's chapter 1:

Excellent!

Gord, do you have enough server space to keep all your files up until the whole book is done? That way Betsie and I won't have yet another project to keep track of. You'll probably be able to use our fancy new uploader when they're done, too!
