Why Marry? by Jesse Lynch Williams (1871-1929)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/why-marry-by-jesse-lynch-williams/
Summary text: Why Marry? is a comedy, which "tells the truth about marriage". We find a family in the throes of proving the morality of marriage to a New Age Woman. Can the family defend marriage to this self-supporting girl? Will she be convinced that marriage is the ultimate sacredness of a relationship or will she hold to her perception that marriage is the basis of separating two lovers.

"Why Marry?" won the first Pulitzer Prize for Drama. (Summary by Linette Geisel)
  1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim (or by the target completion date, whatever is sooner). Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is 11MAR2012.
  2. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a role to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which role you’d like to read. Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/35389
Roles noted in the MW should read from this googledoc: Link
  5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

[Role], [Role description], read by [your name].

If you are reading stage directions, please include for each file:
At the beginning: Act [#] of Why Marry?, by Jesse Lynch Williams. This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit Librivox dot org.
At the end: End of Act [#]. At the end of the play, add End of Why Marry?, by Jesse Lynch Williams.

Ooh, ooh! I LOVE it, you're wonderful, this is great!! Marry me!!

:? Never mind...

To be honest, I'm a bit scared of taking this one on as MC, as I have never done this, but I'm sure either Elizabeth or Arielle will be here soon...

I'm very happy to read the unmarriable Helen, though, thank you! :D
Cheers, Ava.

David beat me to it! However, I can tell you that the reason the MW is all distorted is that someone used [] forum tags instead of <> HTML tags for the links. Putting a link in the magic window is as follows: <a href=" link "> Text you want to appear </a> but leave out the spaces.

oops  I was in a hurry to get the MW filled in and then went to have breakfast without looking at it. Ah, well. It's all fixed now. Thanks.

David,
It looks like I only needed 18 sections. The Footman doesn't have any lines. :hmm:

I'd be happy to read for Ernest, as earnestly as possible, of course. :)
"After the dazzle of day is gone,
Only the dark, dark night shows to my eyes the stars;
After the clangor of organ majestic, or chorus, or perfect band,
Silent, athwart my soul, moves the symphony true."

Hi Linny

As I understand divorce, can I read the role of the Judge?

I promised myself that I would not take on any more dramatic roles, but this one was too hard to resist.

Cheers
