" A Tempestous Voyage of Four Thousand and Ninety-Six Miles Across the American Continent on a Burro, in 340 Days and 2 Hours - starting without a dollar and earning my way." The journey could be accomplished in 5 days by train, but the author took close to a year to work his way across the country, after losing a wager with his publisher on the outcome of a presidential election. This is a witty and amusing account of one man (and his donkey)'s adventures crossing the American continent from New York to San Francisco. As the author says in conclusion:"If ever you are tempted to ride a donkey overland, refrain. Rather creep across backwards on your hands and knees, or circumnavigate the globe in a washtub. If you still persist, why, ride a donkey twenty miles in a pouring rain, then follow your own judgment. If you wish my donkey's advice, I will introduce him. His head is longer than his ears, which was not the case when he set out with me." (Summary by Lynne Thompson)
- How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you'd like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
NOTE to readers: some of the 'adventures' may prove offensive to some readers. At different times, the author torments the mentally ill, shoots wildlife indescriminately, plays cruel tricks on the people he meets and tolerates animal cruelty. LibriVox has a "no censorship" policy, so words must be recorded as is. Please note that the characters who indulge in these are not being deliberately cruel; they are only ignorant and products of their time.
- New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
- Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.
Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
