This project is complete. All associated files can be found on the catalog page: http://librivox.org/mark-twains-speeches-part-2-by-mark-twain/

Mark Twain's Speeches, Part Two - by Mark Twain (1835 - 1910).
This collection of publicly-printed speeches by Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens) was compiled by Paul Fatout and published by the University of Iowa Press in 1976. The speeches are in the Public Domain, and our thanks go to the University of Iowa for making them available for this Public Domain audio recording. The speeches appear in the University of Iowa Press book entitled "Mark Twain Speaking" and are arranged, chronologically, from Twain's first authenticated public speech in 1864, to his last transcribed speech, exactly 10 months before he died. Extensive analysis, introductory material, notes, a chronology and index are included in the printed work. This recorded collection of speeches contains all but 69 of the 195 transcribed speeches by Twain in the printed collection. An earlier Public Domain recording (“Mark Twain’s Speeches, Part One" https://librivox.org/mark-twains-speeches-by-mark-twain/) contains the 69 speeches missing from this recording, and dozens of other transcribed speeches not collected for the publication “Mark Twain Speaking”.
Note: There is no known audio recording of Mark Twain. A recording of William Gillette, a celebrated actor and former neighbor of Twain, is considered to be the most reliable example of his manner of speech. This recording (available at: <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqHPN4lW6tI>) was made at Harvard University in 1934 when Gillette performed his long-practiced imitation of Twain to a class of students.

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): wordperfect

    IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
    Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Just so there are no misunderstandings, here is the email I received from James McCoy, U. of Iowa Press, authorizing our use of the speeches:
++++++++
On Sep 29, 2016, at 11:02 AM, McCoy, James A <james-mccoy at uiowa dot edu> wrote:
The mere act of research and collecting isn’t copyrightable to the best of my knowledge. Any footnotes or auxiliary scholarly material put together by an editor is their property. But the pure text of the texts is not. It’s public domain and anyone can use it for any purpose. So as long as you don’t reproduce any of Fatout’s material you’re ok.
Trust me, i’m dealing with this on another front. I respect Alabama’s advice but this is overkill on their part as far as i’m concerned. In either case this email can serve as permission to use it.

+++++++
McCoy's last sentence refers to the language requested by the University of Alabama for our use of the Public Domain material in their "Mark Twain: The Complete Interviews".

Hi John,
I'll be happy to DPL this for you, if you like. I particularly enjoy 'word perfect' projects.
Max :)

Yes, but we have a button that can batch add the 128kb during cataloging, if they're not there.

I'm at a conference this weekend. I'll change the section count changed when I get back tomorrow.

Max and Karen,
please toss out the000 and 001 that don't have the 128kb stuck on the ends...
I've sent in 3 files that DO have the 128kb on them.

sorry for the error.

OK. As long as the correct files are linked in the MW, the cataloging system will ignore the others.
