Nancy, I have taken a look at your file #8, and there are quite some spikes in the recording, in particular the ones at 2:38, 16:14, and 23:28 prevent this file from being normalised. Amplification won't work either because we don't want clipping.

What you should do for all your files is to work with the "Leveller" function, to lift the quieter parts of the recording (which look like pimples in audacity right now) and at the same time to squish those spikes. I wouldn't go beyond the "moderate" setting though.

Afterwards, you can still work with the "normalize" function to get the recording where it should be wrt volume. If this doesn't work, you will probably need to manually de-amplify the few spikes that cause the problem.

As for amplification: If you want to make the volume louder, you'll need a positive value. If you need to make the volume quieter - deamplify - you'll need a negative value.

Hope this helps.
Cheers, Ava.

Thanks for your reply Ava.
I do not see a "leveler" function in Audacity, but it sounds similar to "Compressor" - would that achieve the same effect?

Here is the file after compression and then normalization. Please let me know what additional changes need to be made.

I see there is also a "Limiter" function...trying to figure out whether compressor or limiter is the way to go before amplifying

I'm afraid I can't help you with this since my ancient computer doesn't allow for a current version of audacity and I don't have a "limiter" function...

Here's the audacity forums, with links to • Tips • Tutorials • Online Manual on the very top.

Hope this helps you further.

Looks great on my end - no clipping whatsoever.

Any feedback from Ava?

Thanks Yuqing.
My last section was actually 13; I believe it went smoothly and it is uploaded, so hopefully the project is complete!
