Thanks, after I went in that is kind of what I thought it was. Well, it is now all cleaned up, here as well as in a play that I am DPL for.

I did not hear the "poof" after :29, perhaps the noise reduction helped with it.
The noise reduction also seems to reduce the volume. I added in the silence at the end. I still have no way to see what the volume is, I have to play that by ear. If it needs adjustment in either direction just let me know how much, that is an easy fix.

Have you tried Checker? https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Checker It is the LV 'gold standard'.

Good reading, but just a few things to check,

Right at the beginning, could you lengthen out the silence before you start speaking to between .5 and 1 second?

8:48 upon the polished blade of which the rays of light flashed with many a wicked gleam and glint. Stumble on the.

10:10 and just after 10:12 there is a sort of 'growl' or such just before you start speaking. Since they are in the middle of a pause, you might be able to either delete them or run a short Noise Reduction.

12:33 Yet in the vestibule stood the one man whom she had most cause to fear, the man who now held her fate in his hand—Nick Carter. Left out: whom she had most cause to fear

The ending silence should be only 5 seconds. You can cut off about ¾ of a second.

Also, but not worth correcting, but something to think about for future recordings, in about five or six places you pronounce Venner with the emphasis on the last syllable. Either would have been fine, but try to keep consistent in your pronunciations.

The info given above from Lynnet is very good. Not only can Checker check the volume for you, it will also tell you the exact length of your recording, but also the 'background noise' level, among other things.

Another tool that I have found invaluable to me is MP3 Gain. (http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/download.php) This tool, when you insert your mP3 file, will check to see what the volume level is and then allows you to choose to have it adjust the volume of the file to close to 89dB automatically (you set what your goal volume is). I then use Checker just to validate MP3 Gain's numbers, because, as Lynnet said, it is the Gold Standard.

If you happen to still have your original recording, I would advise starting over as you are really close. My method: Save to Audacity, then "export" as an MP3 file. Run it through MP3 Gain, and adjust as recommended (I usually have to make mine a little louder). Then "import" audio. Run it through Noise Reduction. Then "Export" as an MP3, then run it through MP3 Gain again, and adjust if/as necessary. I then run it through Checker just to make sure. Then upload it. That has always worked for me and is really 'pretty' easy. This process almost always gets me within .5 dB of 89.

The current volume is 72.2 per Checker. Good luck. Keep up the good work, and DON'T GIVE UP!

Thanks for the pointers Wayne. I am using a chromebook for may recording and editing so it is a bit limited. Checker does not work with the Chrome OS. I will take a look at your other suggestion. Since one of the reasons I am doing this is to learn how to do it even better I always appreciate your input. Right now the volume is my biggest roadblock, so I look forward to trying MP3 Gain to see if that works for me

I 'checked' you recent submission, and it is at 97.2. Now for an idea. I assume that you are using Audacity. If that is correct I think I can solve your problem. I did this on yours as a test and it worked. First, 'import' your file. Then click on 'effect', then 'amplify'. A box will come up. There will be two 'boxes' with numbers in them. The top one will be 'highlighted' blue, and will say '-7.221'. That number refers to about how much your recording is over limits. Then click on the 'OK' at the bottom. When I went through this process, I came up with a reading of 90.2 which is well within parameters. Try this and let me know what happens.

I tried Wayne's latest suggestion about using the amplify effect in Audacity.

Crossing my fingers, if the volume is good now that truly was an easy fix.
I will try to make my next submission go much more smoothly.
