Christian Science by Mark Twain (1835 - 1910).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/christian-science-by-mark-twain/
Christian Science is a 1907 collection of essays Mark Twain wrote about Christian Science, beginning with an article that was published in Cosmopolitan in 1899. Although Twain was interested in mental healing and the ideas behind Christian Science, he was hostile towards its founder, Mary Baker Eddy (1821–1910). He called her, according to American writer Caroline Fraser, "[g]rasping, sordid, penurious, famishing for everything she sees—money, power, glory—vain, untruthful, jealous, despotic, arrogant, insolent, pitiless where thinkers and hypnotists are concerned, illiterate, shallow, incapable of reasoning outside of commercial lines, immeasurably selfish." ( Wikipedia, edited by John Greenman)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.31342/page/n5/mode/2up
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): wordperfect

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Section [number] of Christian Science by Mark Twain. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
"Christian Science, by Mark Twain. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Section [number] of Christian Science by Mark Twain. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Christian Science, by Mark Twain. Recorded by John Greenman "

There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
  • Example filename christianscience_##_twain_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. christianscience_01_twain_128kb.mp3)

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: TriciaG

Quite a large project...but should be very interesting!!
The numberof sections will need to be adjusted down the line since I may need to combine some of the shorter "chapters".

Hi Tricia,
Could you please take a look at this project's MW and how I've set it up??
I'm really not sure it's the best way to present this, but the index leads me towards what I've done...putting all the various segments of chapters 6,7 and 8 together, within the chapter heading.
I could re-do it and list each segment separately, but some are VERY short!!
:-(

no hurry on this.

I would not list all the sub-points of chapters 6-8 but would just put "Book II, Chapter VII" etc.

While they're listed separately in the TOC, I think they're just sections of the chapter. And since you're lumping the whole chapter together, you don't need the subtitles. Plus, they're long and messy. ;)

Tricia,
I'm going to change the source from Guttenberg to Archive!
The Archive version is MUCH more inclusive and doesn't have a major error in the designation of chapters that Guttenberg has.
ALSO...the Archive has notes which have been edited OUT of the G!!
SO...I'll need to redesign the MW a little!
:-)

Still hoping for a proof listener to show up!

I need to change it in the database, so that the final catalog page points to the correct text.

I posted that before you changed the text in the first post. I could have just waited until you had done that. :P

Hello there johng,

I would love to be your DPL for this project.
I am new to prooflistening, but I have done several recordings and I will use the prooflistening template to guide me.

I will get back to you with how the intro sounds!

Great! I've added you in as the official DPL. 8-)

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here:
Instructions for BCs and DPLs

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

These are geared more towards the BC, but the info on how to get into the MW to add the PL notes is the same. :)
