Tertiary or any other five-dollar word.

“Don't use a five-dollar word when a fifty-cent word will do.”

― Mark Twain
I think that after secondary, tertiary is perfectly cromulent. It's quaternary that resounds superfluous.
Am I correct in saying that at 5 in the afternoon in the tropics everything is quininary?
Your postulation, as usual, results in an affirmative nod, unless of course, in the Congo-Nigerian linguistic regions where the number system is senary.

uuuh, here was the thread i enjoyed reading that much and that led to me wondering about when i will stumble upon a word to add to my lists..
well, i had to read "disadvantageously"
after the 5th? or 10th? time, it sounded just as a question. i clearly wondered about this word while reading and..
advantage, advantageously, disadvantage...all is ok, but this "disadvantageously"...

i can hiss it, i can ask it, but i cannot read it normally.
i failed.
:D

Have you tried the carrot/cork technique? put a cork between your teeth and try it repeatedly. Then when the cork is out it flows.

If I have real trouble with a word I've never said before, I try to split it into syllables and work out which I will stress and say it slowly a few times.

Try focusing on the first few syllables, then the middle syllables, then the end syllables, recording each time. Then you can cut/paste all the best "takes" together at the hard stops (such as disad - vent - ag - eously if you need to break it down to its smallest parts by hard stops). 8-)

I would treat it like an obvious misprint. (Wink.)

yes, i tried to variate the spoken word and that was somehow the best version.

i will try the carrot technique, though (thank you realisticspeakers!) - to be honest, librivox has helped wonders with my english :-)
and why not learning to speak english with a carrot in your mouth? i think, babies do so, too...
:D

Consideratively.
Read something recently when a young character was said to look into the fire 'consideratively'.
Apart from being hell to say, is it even a word??
