The Bolshevik Myth by Alexander Berkman (1870 - 1936).

The Bolshevik Myth (Diary 1920–1922) is a book by Alexander Berkman describing his experiences in Bolshevist Russia from 1920 to 1922, where he saw the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917. Written in the form of a diary, The Bolshevik Myth describes how Berkman's initial enthusiasm for the revolution faded as he became disillusioned with the Bolsheviks and their suppression of all political dissent. ( Wikipedia)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/alexander-berkman-the-bolshevik-myth-diary-1920-22
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Magic Window:

    BC Admin
  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of The Bolskevik Myth by Alexander Berkman. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Bolskevik Myth, by Alexander Berkman. "

There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
  • Example filename bolshevikmyth_##_berkman_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. bolshevikmyth_01_berkman_128kb.mp3)

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: yy - TriciaG
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Hi Simon. The link Kevin posted would definitely be the preferred one. Also, please see my comments in your test thread.

Moving this to Book Suggestions for now. Once you've got a couple sections under your belt (as per the test thread), please post back in this thread, and an admin will move it back to the Launch Pad for you. :)

Hi! I've finally done 3 sections, for "The Cambridge Modern History. Volume 02, The Reformation" (section 17, 18 and 19).
I'm waiting to hear final comments for section 19, but I'm very excited to have finally completed those, and I wanted to get a head start with this project.
What is the next step?

Also, given the process that I'm used to (uploading sections, with a project manager's name), I'm not sure of the whole process if I do it myself.
Do I still upload each chapters individually?
How can I listen/share the book that I'll be recording?
Do I upload the files somewhere in particular (more than just the links in the upload tool)?

Thanks!

I'll move you back to the launch pad. We don't use project manager - we use BC - book coordinator - which will be you.
The folders you have uploader to are not the BC's - they are the MC - meta coordinator. When you are in the launch pad a MC will pick your project up, add it to the database and check that the intros and outros work, and tell you how to edit the magic window. There are many projects there at present so it may not happen too quickly

This is set up.

As you're the soloist, you're in charge of updating the Magic Window.

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here:
Instructions for Soloists

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

I've entered the first two chapters for you as an example. You can fill in the rest.

When you upload a chapter, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.

(P.S. Apparently you entered "Bolskevik Myth" into the template, so that's what it spat out in your intros, etc. I fixed it in the file name; I figure you know how to pronounce the word, so I didn't bother fixing them in the intro/outro wordings.) ;)

Since the soloist has logged in since my last post, I assume he's seen the latest posts. Moving this to Going Solo.

Oh, sorry yes, I did not realized I should say something. I already recorded the first 2 chapters and the intro, I'm editing it, but I was not able to login on the link to edit the magic board. I'll try again.

Did you set the password for the Magic Window? (It's a different login system than the forum.)

Hi Tricia,

I have not set the password for the magic window, but when I click on BC Admin, it says "You don't have permissions for this area."
Here's the Preface.

https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/bolshevikmyth_00_berkman_128kb.mp3

I had a lot of reverb and I played with the audio settings a lot, and now it may sound a bit muffled...
If you have suggestion for common audio adjustments in Audacity for people in small, echo-y rooms, it would be welcome.

I have recorded Chapter 1 and 2 as well, I'm editing them, but I'll adjust based on your comments.

Thanks!

I have not set the password for the magic window, but when I click on BC Admin, it says "You don't have permissions for this area."
That's because you logged into the uploader using the generic login and password. Log out of that, then follow the instructions for logging into the MW for the first time, here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Soloists:_How_to_update_the_Magic_Window

I know of no effects or ways to limit room echo after the fact. (Beforehand, you can hang blankets or stack pillows or something to absorb the echo.)

Kevin will PL your file, as he's the DPL. :)
