I think I used the wrong sample rate. Do I need to fix that? How do I fix that?

G
Yes and yes it does need to be fixed.

Before you export the file, look for the box in the lower left of Audacity labeled "Project Rate" Select 4100 from the drop down menu. This will "stick" for subsequent sessions.

But, you also need to lower the volume. Our target is 89 dB with an acceptable range of 86-92 dB, and this one measures 92.5 dB. Use the Amplify tool under the Effects menu and set it to -2.5 and this should get it closer.

A sample of your reading sounds excellent!

==================================
Here are two programs that I use to adjust the volume of recordings:

1. CHECKER
https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Checker

This little program was written specifically for LibriVox, and is very easy to use.
Just drag your file to the Checker window, and it will quickly check it for all LibriVox specifications and give you a report.

One of the measurements is the volume in decibels. Use the Amplify feature under the Effect menu in Audacity to adjust the volume, by setting the value to plus or minus to bring the recording close to the LV target of 89 dB.

2. ReplayGain
https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Measuring_Volume_within_Audacity

This article will introduce you to ReplayGain, which is a plugin specifically for Audacity. There is a link to download it and a link to a tutorial on how to use it. Once installed, it is easy to use. Depending on your version of Audacity, it will appear either in the Analyze menu or the Effects menu. ReplayGain can be selected to analyze the recording, giving a reading of how many decibels, plus or minus, that the recording is off from the target. It is then easy to use the Audacity Amplify feature to make the adjustment before exporting the file.

Then, please adjust the volume. Yours measures

changed rate and lowered volume, give this a try.

https://librivox.org/uploads/mightyfelix/whyisthenegrolynched_06_douglass_128kb.mp3

Thanks for the feedback and the info about how to fix. I have used the librivox checker, does the file have to be an MP3?

Another question about the checker, does it have to be loaded every time I use it, or have I missed a last step somewhere? I have the icon on my screen but it seems to load every time.

I'll go read about the replay.

Do you use audacity? I'm fumbling my way through it but would love to have a good source, not the online manual audacity team provides, to be able to look things up. For instance, my space bar has no effect on anything and I think it's supposed to stop/start play. That would be nice? I'm also looking for some easy to understand, for a newbie, info about how to set up punch and roll.

Thanks again Larry,
Gene

Sorry that I missed this. I've now marked it Ready for Spot PL... Unless... Larry, did you only listen to part of it before? So there may have been other edits needed besides the technical? :hmm: Well, in any case, this recording passes Checker, so we're good there.

Yes, Gene, every file does need to be an mp3. That's the only format that archive will accept from us.

I'm not sure I understand your question about the Checker. I can give you a bit of help with Audacity, though. You can find lots of helpful videos here: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Instructional_Videos

But the ones that would probably be most helpful for your specific questions are:

This one, which explains how to customize your keyboard shortcuts. I don't remember if the space bar has a default function, but this is how you can set it to do whatever you want it to do! I have customized my keyboard shortcuts quite heavily, after learning how to do it. It's very helpful!

And this one, made by yours truly, demonstrating how to use Punch and Roll in Audacity. :)

No, I did not PL the entire recording. I wanted to make sure we had the tech parameters set first. A bit late tonight, but I will listen to this soon.

Checker is installed just once. I keep a shortcut to it in my tool bar, but I use it so much it is always open, so I can just bring it up and drag a file into it. I use it primarily for proof listening. For my recordings, I use ReplyGain. It is an Audacity Plugin in, so once it's plugged in, it is there under the Effects menu.

Stay tuned.
