The Thirty-Nine Steps, by John Buchan (1875 - 1940)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-thirty-nine-steps-by-john-buchan-2/

Richard Hannay thirsts for adventure. Down and out in early retirement in South London, Hannay bores of the easy life. When Franklin Scudder reveals a secret ploy to set all of Europe to arms, Hannay finds his cure. With experience, intelligence, and a good deal of luck, Richard Hannay peels the layers one step at a time.

Target completion date: 2021-03-15

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thom,
I'd be happy to MC this for you. I'll get your MW set up and be back with some further instructions.

OK, Your MW is set up.

For a solo project, you are the Book Coordinator. That means you fill out the Magic Window and post your links and times in the window when you upload your files.

You'll need to start by logging into the magic window. Instructions are in the BC How-to; and this is a more detailed version of the First Login instructions (with pictures!) Please be sure to read all of the BC How To document, as that will give you more information on your role as a BC.
Note that passwords for the magic window and the forum are not connected. You can use the same password in both places (I think a lot of people do), but if you change it on one system, it won't affect the password on the other system.

Next, you'll need to start entering section (or chapter) titles. I've entered the first couple to get you started.

Then you are ready to start recording. When you upload a section, it's your responsibility to add the link and duration (mm:ss) to the Magic Window. Link from the uploader goes in the "listen URL" column, duration goes in the "notes" column. Then be sure to post in the thread that a new section is ready for PL so your DPL knows there is something new.

If you have questions, or if you have any trouble with the instructions in the BC how to, please post and we'll work through it together. There is a bit of a learning curve when you do your first solo. You've picked a nice size book - not too long and something that you are interested in, so it should be a manageable and enjoyable process for you.

Wow. Thank you so much! This is all quite new but I am sure to get it figured.

Our good friend Mr. Silver Quill mentioned that there is only one book intro, not chapter intros as are done in collaborations. Where can I find this? Must I say "This is a Librivox recording..." before every Chapter (Section)?

I have attempted the 1st Step of the Instructions. Entered username, forgot password, reset password. I am getting the message "You don't have permissions for this area." Any clues to what I need to fix?

The intros are different for the first section and the second (and later) sections. The intro for each situation is given right below the magic window in the first post.

That likely means you are already logged in using the generic uploader password. So click on the "log out" button, and start over. It should then allow you to "reset" (ie, "set") your personal password. From here on out, I suggest you use your personal login (for MWs) whenever you log in to upload a section.

Let me know if this is not clear, or if you have other questions.

I have tried many times. I have Reset the Password through the email, logged out, click the BC Admin under the MW, entered the new password, and still getting that message. I will keep trying. I've logged out of the main forum and done the same. Still no access.

I don't think I got around to thanking you.

It's coming together. I should be posting as early as tomorrow.

Section 01 The Man Who Died

31:22

I posted the link in BC Admin. It is posted and functioning in the MW. Aside from pasting the link in BC Admin, what other steps should I take?

Thom,

Enter the duration in the Notes field, and mark the status field as "Ready for PL".

The time helps me at cataloging make sure a file did not get cut off when I pulled it, but more than that, it helps the PLer to manage their time when they choose what to listen to next.

Larry will change the status to "see PL Notes" or "PL OK" when he finishes. Some DPLs rely on posts to the project thread to know when a section is ready for PL, others rely on their reader page, which will show the status of every section on the projects where they are DPL.

Ah, creepy story and so wonderfully read.
Glad to mark it PL OK.

I think MaryAnn has answered your questions.

You don't actually have to post the link in the forum, although it's fine if you do. But do post something here to let me know there is a new section Ready for PL. I also rely on the Workflow manager, and it won't show up there unless you toggle the Status menu to "Ready for PL."

Anyway, we're off to a great start!
