Edited and re-uploaded, with the

1847 -vs.- 1846
bit already fixed.

The saying "wszystko się ułoży" (or "it will all settle itself" as Brandes puts it) is still a very popular saying :)

The bit about szlachta or aristocracy not doing anything useful with their money has been noted, for example, in Prus's "Lalka". Although, the minor character Ochocki, who while related to an artistocratic family, decided to pursue science, is seen by his relatives as a weirdo dreaming about lighter-than-air flying machines.

Fixed and re-uploaded.

Also, I've recently found a video (in Polish, with bits of Haitian creole (?) and rudimentary English) about the descendants of the Polish legionnaires in Haiti. Interesting but also depressing seeing the poverty there.

Section 9 has been uploaded.

Henryk Sienkiewicz's works from Polish history that Brandes dismisses, form today a part of the Polish cannon. We have some of them in the catalogue in the English translation, if you're curious :) Also, were the governor's actions meant to be shown as "humane" in this case? I don't get it. Unless the idea was that quick execution was better than Siberian hard labour.

My reading is that the adjective has to do with his devising an opportunity for those who were about to be killed to get to see and say goodbye for good to their relatives.

Section 12 has been fixed. Also, I genuinely misread it as Marx and even wondered at the name :P

Other fixes will come shortly.

The "conversationalist/controversialist" thing actually made me do a double-take and I still somehow got it the other way round
p77, last four lines ( )
That sentence was ... something else  I have no idea if I got it correctly...

Section 9 has been fixed.

EDIT: Also, I've noticed that most of flubs were towards the end of the section. This may have something to do with the feeling I was getting as I was reading it. At some point it felt like the sentences just started getting more complex culminating in the closing.... thing

all PL OK!
The Dilemma he illustrates is actually not unique to that place and time, but to be found every time a nation is under occupation; a big one.
Anyway, in general, the Study shows many interesting situations we can relate to, aside of agreeing or not with some stances of the author.
